Michael,

I had a problem on one of our ward computers when I installed MLS. I
could connect to SL, the security and password went though okay and you
could see the data being transferred but after several minutes I would
get the error "unable to connect to the modem". After about a week with
SL's help they were able to determine what the problem was. When I
installed MLS I wanted to keep the dos partition so I installed it on
the unformatted partition which was the "F" drive. Consequently in
communicating through the modem some files couldn't be found as they
needed to be placed on the "C" drive. The tech I talked to had to
search 100's of lines of data on the tries I had made in sending and
receiving the data. When it got to the point of searching the "F" drive
the error occurred. After reinstalling MLS on the "C" drive everything
worked okay.

Another problem I had on several of our first installs was that I did a
FAT32 install instead of NTFS. One computer worked okay but two of them
gave me the "can not connect to the modem" error. When I called SL they
asked me what install I did, I told them FAT32. They said that was the
problem, MLS needed to be run on an NTFS partition. I told them that I
could not find anything in the install instructions saying we had to use
NTFS. They said they would make that change to the instructions.
Anyway, after reinstalling MLS on NTFS partitions both computers worked
okay.
Hope that helps.

It makes the connection to SL and goes through the whole connection
process. This includes the IP address that pops up at one point. It
definetly isn't the security thing. I have had that error before,
usually says something about security failure with that. I did have SL
reset the password yesterday before they left for the day.

I mentioned before that I had tried another modem, that didn't help. I
also set it up to dial into my ISP so I know it will connect. Even went
as far as downloading virus def file updates with no problem. Tried new
versions of modem drives and firmware upgrades to.

It really seems to be some kind of issue with the exchange of info with
SL. It actually stays connected till I hit the cancel button so it
isn't like SL is dropping the connection or anything either. Just for
kicks I left it connected for 5 minutes with that error on the screen
just to see what would happen.

First of all, how far is the connection process getting? Does the modem
even dial out? Does it find another modem? Details are important here.

Try this. Go into Dial-up Networking. You'll find a "MLS" connection.
Run
it. How far does it get? If it's working right, you'll reach a point
where
it signs in and it looks like you've connected to the internet (you'll
get
the two computer screens linked by a cable icon in the system tray. For
most machines that's in extreme the bottom right corner of the screen
next
to the clock.)

Also check the basics. Make sure the modem is plugged in to the right
com
port and turned on, etc.

Let me know how far the test gets.

One issue I think you'll run into is that in deleting things you
probably
have wiped out your password, so that SLC will have to "reset" your
connection. Since you've been working with support hopefully they've
done
that already.

That is the message we are getting on our Stake computer. Anyone ever
get this and find a way past it? I have talked several times to SL.
Wish they has some weekend support. Here are a few of the things tried:

tried another know working modem

New install of MLS (using the following procedure from SL)
Use Add/Remove Programs to remove Afaria and MLS
then delete c:\afaria
then delete c:\program files\lds church
then delete c:\program files\jre
reboot
reinstall ver 2.1.4 from new CD SL sent
restore data from last good back up
send/receive data

always get error (and a cute lttle frowny face that isn't so cute right
now):
An error occured while transmitting. Please contact Support for help.
Error: Afaria #100 "General Failure"

Have also tried on my own clearing any leftover MLS and Afaria things
from registery

The only thing I can guess is that our back up is corrupted to.

any thoughts appreciated

Michael
