I'm no longer serving in a BYU Student Stake, but from what I could see when I was, we were sending out bishops and stake presidents to all parts of the world as fast as we could - 
Of course, these were the kit version - some assembly required - but some of the young men I saw go through the student wards definitely have the qualities of priesthood leadership, and as a plus, they are also very comfortable with computer technology!
So, hang in there, help is on the way!

But then my stake (particularly the northern half of it) has a tradition of the best kids going off to BYU and not coming back.  I somehow did - though not by choice - and I've been an assistant stake clerk ever since I moved back here.  (Four and a half years and counting . . .)

when I looked back at the site yesterday, it was all gone.
That took some time to put it in and if someone removed it, would have taken
a long time to do that also.
Can CHQ do a wipe of all information in there for some reason.

I also entered ours last week and they're gone. Bummer. Yes, it could happen
fairly easily (and instantaneously) if someone gave the wrong database
command. I've sent a message to HQ to see if they can restore the data, as
our database administrators at work normally are able to do.

And that is one of the reasons I do not like to be first any more.  
By watching as several of you lose your data while SL gets the

It does not fix checks that were entered but not transmitted, either.  
I am now in the plethora.

The clerk beat me to the computer last night, and had written some 
checks, so I just had him exit out, I upgraded, and then we did the 
S/R.  The trap was set.

Of course, the problem is not that the checks get hung when 
you try to transmit them.  The problem is that the checks get 
hung when you first enter them.  So the developers now have 
seven more to fix.

And my question for Alan and Reed, when the command file 
comes back from SL on an upcoming Send/Receive, does it 
run automatically, or does it have to be manually fired off?  And 
is a reboot involved?

I ask because I am over an hour away from the stake center, and 
the person who will do the next two S/Rs has trouble logging in.  
So I am trying to decide if I should let them do it, or just wait a 
week until I am down there next.  At least SL triggered the backup 
and I got it sent before I left last night.

I am hoping that the next S/R will load the command file, it will 
run automatically, and that a second S/R will transmit the hung 
checks.

If I am wrong, I will need to call SL and read off the list of checks, 
because the bills are due this week, and not whenever things 
get fixed things.

So, for those of you with experience [grin], is this a transparent 
process, without any user involvement required?  (other than 
doing enough S/Rs, of course).

Thanks in advance.  When this is all done, I will be able to help 
train other stake clerks.  I am beginning to see the pattern here.

Doubt it.  What probably happened is that they loaded the shift from 
2006 to 2007, found an error, and reloaded.

Between the time that they loaded it and found the error, some of 
out most faithful folks magnified their callings.

This brings new meaning to that term, I suppose.

I don't know, you are already ahead of me in the process.  I emailed a
backup to CHQ, as directed, and got this response:

"Dear Clerk,

Unfortunately our email system does not take attachments.  Please call us at
the stake computer so we can set up a flag to receive your most current MLS
backup.  Thank you."

So I guess I'll be spending part of a lunch hour at the stake computer,
unless I wait until Tuesday or Wednesday evening.  I am one of the fortunate
ones that live and work in reasonably close proximity to the stake center.

It does not fix checks that were entered but not transmitted, either.  
I am now in the plethora.

The clerk beat me to the computer last night, and had written some 
checks, so I just had him exit out, I upgraded, and then we did the 
S/R.  The trap was set.

Of course, the problem is not that the checks get hung when 
you try to transmit them.  The problem is that the checks get 
hung when you first enter them.  So the developers now have 
seven more to fix.

And my question for Alan and Reed, when the command file 
comes back from SL on an upcoming Send/Receive, does it 
run automatically, or does it have to be manually fired off?  And 
is a reboot involved?

I ask because I am over an hour away from the stake center, and 
the person who will do the next two S/Rs has trouble logging in.  
So I am trying to decide if I should let them do it, or just wait a 
week until I am down there next.  At least SL triggered the backup 
and I got it sent before I left last night.

Doesn't that just frost you?  Even when we do exactly as we 
are asked to do, it doesn't work.  And they wonder why there 
is such a fuss.

The last time I e-mailed "as instructed", the mail system was 
full and the message was rejected.  I attempted to send the 
message again two busniess days later.  The system was 
still full and the message was rejected.

At that point, I decided that if they could not help themselves, 
I would not be able to help them, either, and I stopped trying.

Maybe they don't take attachments anymore because they 
can't keep up with the mail.  They used to take them.  In fact, 
if they did not, I would have three computers as paperweights 
right now if there were not a way to e-mail attachments back 
and forth.

In this particular case, though, it really is much easier for them 
to just trigger a backup during the normal S/R.  They do it once 
a month already, the backup is in a place where they know to 
look for it, it doesn't get corrupted in the various e-mail systems 
floating around, and the earth stays in orbit, etc.

Besides, why would you want to mail a 1.7 meg attachment 
anyway?  (I know.  Because they asked you to.  Duh!)  I can 
get a lot more scripture reading done while sitting for 20-30 
minutes on a dialup at 14.4 or 28.8 mbps instead.

In fact, I've written complete talks during S/Rs.

The command file ran automatically at the end of the the first Send/Receive
after SLC prepared the command file. I knew the command file had been
prepared last Friday only because I had talked to Clerk Support that day --
otherwise I don't know how you could know for certain.

The running of the command file was rather invisible to me. There was no
feedback in the program, and no reboot was involved. But something was
changed in the database so that the next Send/Receive (which I did in the
same MLS session, without even logging off) finally transmitted the checks
that had been hung up. At the end of that second S/R session I received the
normal Finance Transmission Report which showed that the 8 checks had been
transmitted.

I have had no problems with transmitting checks in stake MLS since then.

I think the quote was about not waiting for them or disturbing 
the peace, er, reverence, with all of the paper rustling, or 
something like that.  I also remember it.  Well, not very 
well, but yes, I did hear it and could not find the reference 
when I needed it last.

Still looking.  I think it was either in a conference talk or, 
more likely, one of those Worldwide Leadership meetings, 
although I have not been able to put my finger on it just yet.

The Bishop is going to check with the Stake offices to see if they

Nate, 
Your bishop has to request them from the Church Offices and usually will
only give you one or two at a time.  They don't like having "stashes" of
these in the clerks offices.  If the Stake has one that would work in a
pinch.

As I recall the bishop must call Salt Lake to get those forms.  The 
phone number for the First Presidency Office is on the  Church 
Organization Information CD.  Your ward should have the CD. The Bishop 
also can get the phone number via the Internet using a Special Bishops 
Username and password to log onto the "Bishops" web page..

Simply call the "main" Church office number of 800-453-3860 and ask
the operator for the Office of the First Presidency.
You don't need to know any special phone numbers.

Ward Clerks should be allowed to get on the online COI web site.

Any application to the First Presidency is coordinated with the stake anyway, so they should have that form.  To get that form takes a phone call.  Our stake clerk makes all such calls so I don't know who is and who is not allowed to a request for such a form.

A while back, he probably was sent out the instructions to log on and a time sensitive key to log on.  If he didn't get them or did didn't do it within the month of getting the letter, he will need to call again and get a new set on instructions and a key set out again.

Does anyone know how to get an "Application to the First Presidency"?
My Bishop and I cannot locate any in the ward stash of documents.
Does Distribution Services have them?  If so, I know they are not
available to order online (for good reason).  I know that the CHI
states they are available via the office of the First Presidency, but
I just want to check if anyone knows if they can be had elsewhere.
The Bishop is going to check with the Stake offices to see if they
have any, but just in case....

Bishops, Stake Presidents, Stake Presidency Councilors and Stake Clerks 
have online access to the COI using the same username and password they 
use for the Ward and Stake website. There is a special access code 
required the first time they log in. That access code and the URL is 
mailed to them within a few weeks of when CHQ gets the paperwork notifying 
them of a newly set apart stake presidency member or bishop.

Not enough information. What specifically is the question? Depending on 
the question, it may need to be directed to the candidate's insurance 
provider. Otherwise, I would just call the Missionary Department (call the 
800 number, select extention 0, ask for missionary department).

There is a group within the missionary department called "pre-field
services" or something like that, that handles missionary issues prior to
the missionary departing for service.  I don't know the number but you could
call the Global Service Desk at 1-800-453-3860 x 24357, and go from there.

If I remember right, I received a letter from SL giving me a username and
password to sign in with, or it might have been my conf date and membership
number. I can't recall, been about a year.
I know I have the letter filed away in my desk at church. I'll check
tomorrow when I am there.
I know that I have my own username and password to get me into it now.
It is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I use it all the time and it is
updated regularly.
They even have all the offices and departments from CHQ on there also.

If you did not already have a login set up for Church sites, you 
would have needed your membership record number and your 
confirmation date.

The letter from SL had a code you had to enter the first time 
you logged into the site.  After your first successful login, you 
do not need that code again.  It is one of the security features

I thought the Clerks should have access also. It is not a big issue with 
me so I passed on looking into it any further and just get along with

Looks like a coincidence to me.  His blog mentions the Mormon Tabernacle
Choir mixed in there with the Chowder, Genesis, and Trekkies stuff.  Google
Ads on the side bar are automatically linked to the word mormon and show
whatever ads are "relevant".  When I happened to look it had an ad for an
atheist book (along with the Mormon ring tones).  D'oh!  That's an even
worse coincidence.  Our advertising-driven "web-society" still has some
things to figure out.

Does the list have a rule about what can be in our signatures?  If there is
not such a rule, I'm not sure anything bad happened here.  He's got a url to
his blog in his signature, so?  You didn't have to go there.  If there is a
forum rule about that, then why don't we just say "Bad Matt", slap him on
the wrist, and ask him to remove the url from his signature?

Don't get me wrong, if someone posted a controversial or offensive URL in
their signature (which he did not do) I think they should be booted from the
list.  If there is a rule about the signatures and they don't follow it, I
think they should be warned once, then booted from the list.

I worked with Matt for over a year, and I'm sure he meant no harm with the
url, it's probably automagically appended to his emails by whatever email
system he uses.

You can, but it's a self-defeating application.

If you think so highly of yourself that you would apply to the
First Presidency, then you don't have the humility necessary
for the job.

Now, if they had an "Exemption from First Presidency" application
form, that might give them a good list of possible candidates.

lot of effort and care to make sure that SPAM and other unwanted
advertising doesn't appear.

However, standard practice on all systems involving email and similar
messages is to allow those posting to advertise in a short signature
attached to the end of the messages they send. As far as I can tell, all
Matt has done is post a reference to his blog in his signature. He didn't
even advertise his Ring tones, just his blog.

Sorry, but I don't see anything wrong with what he posted. In fact, he's
been refreshingly subtle about what he advertises.

In addition. I should note that I still reserve the right to support the
list by selling advertisements on the messages that appear. I haven't done
it so far, and I may never do it. But I won't claim that I won't accept
such advertising in the future.

And just to clarify. He is NOT selling Mormon ring tones. Those a Google
ads. The person that advertises with Google is selling the ring tones, He is
simply publishing Google's ads. It is a way many of us poor website owners
keep our services up and available for free to our visitors. I have Google,
yahoo, Amazon and several other companies ads all over my sites. It is the
only way I could keep them going. Listing a website in a signature does not
make any one click on it and force them to see those horrible ads. Gasp! So
next time you see a site you really loved taken on-line because no one
bought anything from their ads or they were afraid to post ads just remember
it is those ads that keep a lot of us going.

I will step down off of my soap box now.

I agree, lighten up. I didn't even notice the link in the signature.
After it was made mention of, I clicked it and had to look at the blog
page at least a few times before I even noticed the advertisement in
question. All you're talking about is that mere Google "Ad-Words" spot
off on the side?! It's pretty obvious that the member of this list who
happens to have a link to his blog in his e-mail signature is NOT
selling any cell phone ringtones. The ad was purchased by some 3rd
party. Anyone familer with Google's advertising practices, they merely
obtain a space on a page to sell some very basic plain text ads. (And
even if it were some obnoxious flashy animated pop-up ad, the ad wasn't
posted on this list. Merely a link to the blog page was, in the form of
a message signature.)

The google search engine selects brief text ads based on key-words found
in the document on which they appear. So, the fact that somebody selling
ringtones (who probably never knew of LDS-Clerks or the existance of
this blog page) bought a Google Ad-Word for "Mormon" now has their ad
appear on ad-word sponsored pages that happen to contain the word
"Mormon". I don't think it's unreasonable that member of the church
would mention the word "Mormon" on his blog, and I imagine the very thin
amount of money made from the google ad-word click throughs is probably
what is paying for his hosting service for hosting a page to post his
blog. Makes sense to me, and doesn't seem at all unreasonable. In fact,
now that you mention it I wouldn't mind having a Spirit of God ringtone
and I probably would never have even had the idea aside from the fact
that we're having this discussion.

Also, If I had a link to my own blog on my e-mail signature, I sure
wouldn't want to bother with having to change my signature everytime I
make a post on a specific listserv. I'd probably just unsubscribe from
the listserv for its unreasonable posting requirements instead.

I must admit, I don't know exactly how the Google ads are getting where you
can see them. Are you using gmail or something to read your mail? Are you
reading in html?

I believe you CAN avoid these ads by switching to the other version of
LDSClerks.

As I mention from time to time, LDSClerks exists in two different forms.

On one hand, it exists as a Yahoo! Group. If you subscribe using
yahoo!groups, messages come in html format, and include ads that Yahoo!
puts on them (however, I don't think these are the source of the ads you
see, since Yahoo! has its own version of these ads).


On the other hand, you can receive LDSClerks from mormonstoday.com, my
server. These messages are sent out text only and so far have not included
any ads. My software is set up to exclude most html from the messages, so
it would be quite difficult for the messages to include any ads. All
messages that appear on the Yahoo!Group version of the list first pass
through this server.

Regardless of which source you get LDSClerks from, if you are reading
messages from the list on a browser or through a web-based service like
hotmail, gmail, etc., you might get ads sold by the service. I can't
control those ads, unfortunately.

I hope that clears up the situation a bit. As I've said before, I take
great pains to make sure messages sent to LDSClerks are clean. To send
messages to the list, you must either be subscribed to the mormonstoday.com
version of the list, or have your messages approved by me. Without that,
the message doesn't go through.

Matt is apparently subscribed to LDSClerks on mormonstoday.com, so his
message didn't need to be approved. BUT, the google ads you are complaining
about are NOT on his message. So the google ads must have been inserted
after it passed through our server and out of our control.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this. I know its
somewhat complicated, but I like the fact that we're in a highly visible
place like Yahoo!Groups, and yet we still maintain most of the control that
comes from running your own list server.

One of our bishops called Salt Lake and advised that a full three-hour
block should be held that Sunday.  The only exception I remember was on

I think one of two things may have happened.

One, someone clicked on the link in the sig line and 
did not like what they found.

Two, someone pointed out the sig line as a clever method 
of getting folks to check it out.

Since I never clicked on the link in the sig line, I do not 
know what the fuss is all about, except that I actually do, 
second hand, because of what has happened.

It is an interesting advertising technique.  "You should 
check out this site.  You won't believe what they have 
there."

Click.

And it is certainly more interesting than "Check out the 
CHI on page nn, where you will find the answer to your 
clerking question."  [grin]

We had 2 wards become 3, and two of the things
that came back later to get us were:

1) "Other" accounts - It is especially important
   that a boy's "share" of the Scout Fund (because
   the boy participated in fundraising) follows him
   into the new unit's Scout Fund.

2) Missionary Support Payments - If a family has
   a son or daughter on a mission before the split
   make sure they donate to the unit (and only that
   unit) that is having the Mission Cost deducted
   from their unit bank account.  Otherwise, it
   can get a bit messy to iron out later.

Of course, one of the biggest thing to do is to
make sure the split takes into account "active"
membership - not records only.  One of our wards
is really small, because it's boundries are full
of inactives.

I got a call from my SP wondering how we can use the web site calendar 
to publicize multi-stake Single Adult activities.
Since the member's login will take him/her to their home ward/stake, my 
best guess was that the information would have to be duplicated on each 
participating stake's calendar.
Does anyone know of a simpler approach?  Is there a way to set up 
something that will cross stake boundaries with a single calendar entry? 
With all the extensive training I received pertaining to being the web 
site administrator (which is to say, none), I don't know if this can be 
done or how.
