CORRECTION:
I was not satisfied with the answers I got from the Level 1 tech at the
Global Service Desk, so I called back two hours later, and got forwarded to
the CCN team. They gave me completely different answers.
If you want your wireless connection to be "supported" by the Global Service
Desk and the CCN Team, you MUST use the Cisco Aironet wireless access point,
the Odyssey Client, and the standard configuration. The Global Service Desk
and the CCN Team will program both the Cisco Pix and the Cisco Aironet to
their specifications. We at the local level have absolutely no control over
it.
How much does a Cisco Aironet cost? We may never know. The CCN Team told me
to contact Jamie Childs childsbj at ldschurch.org and find out how we should
ask for an Aironet. Who pays for it? Church HQ, of course. Not the FM. Not
the stake. Are you believing that?
I don't either, because the memo we received from Greg Stark on 3/2/2007
titled "Internet Policy for MLS group" implies that they don't want to spend
money to connect admin computers. "MLS access is not a justification for a
new CCN site." Well, I have two existing CCN sites that do not have any
wireless equipment. What do I do?

The Level 1 tech at the GSD told me the following:
- We do NOT have to purchase a Cisco Aironet for those chapels that have a
Cisco Pix, but no Aironet. We can purchase any wireless access point or
router off the shelf. When I asked what sort of encryption to use (WEP, WPA,
etc), the Level 1 tech could not tell me, since they only support the
Aironet. So I asked him what type of encryption THEY used on the Aironet. No
answer.
- Whether we use an Aironet or some other brand of wireless device, we MUST
install and use the Odyssey Client software. The Church has purchased
Odyssey licenses for each CCN node, so we need to use them.
- I asked how much a Cisco Aironet costs when ordered through the Church
distribution system. He told me to call 1-800-537-5971. I did. Guess what?
There are no Cisco devices listed in the Distribution Catalog. So my
question remains -- how much does it cost?
If we ask our FM to buy this equipment, he will put it on his 2008 budget,
and we will wait. If we want it now, we need to find money in our stake
budget to pay for it. Normally, FM is only required to get involved and pay
for it when such installations require putting holes in walls or other
modifications to the building.

I have now connected two clerk's computers through the existing Cisco
Aironet 1200 wireless access points in two chapels, with one more to go. I
have two other chapels that have CCN nodes, but no Aironet.
The Global Service Desk told me to contact my Facilities Manager, who would
order two Aironets for us through Church distribution channels. Well, here
are the problems I see:
- Since wireless networks do not require modifications to the buildings
(holes in walls), the stake is responsible for the cost of purchasing
Aironets and wireless adapters.
- I don't really know how much the Church will charge us for a Cisco
Aironet. It could be anywhere from $500 to $1000. How do I find out the
cost, so we can add it to next year's budget?
- As far as I can tell, the Aironet use WEP encryption. Do you suppose the
Church would allow us to locally purchase a much cheaper wireless access
point that supports WPA? I would rather spend $100 for WPA than to spend
over $500 for WEP.
I am going to call the GSD today and try to get these questions answered.
