There are several things we run into during the course of carrying out
our callings where we need to balance how we utilize the Lord's funds
versus something that would really be nice to have but we can still
operate with the lower-end option. In my case we don't have FHC issues.
There are two units that use our meeting house. We both use dial-up
access for MLS transmissions. Sure it would help with some things to
have internet access from the Clerk's office, but if the extra cost of
broadband installation and support is much more that our dial-up option
(which basically is free since we have to have phones anyway), then I am
willing to sacrifice some of those delays.

I've been accustomed to doing other stuff during normal MLS
transmissions, so most of the time I don't even realize the (lack of)
transmission speed. I know my time is valuable, and I am reminded of
that all the time, just as all members serving in the church. The small
sacrifice I have to make once or twice a week of a few minutes seems
small when I know funds needed to implement a broadband connection could
be used for those who are much less fortunate than I am. Fortunately we
do have options that allow us to install from a CD so Stake clerks don't
have to download large install packs for each unit they support.

PS - I really do enjoy my calling. Hang in there....

Steve

now I am no longer impressed.
I read the Q&A posted below on the church's tech site.
Basically it says that my time as a clerk is near worthless & that we
can have dial-up (and let's add memory lacking PC's) because it saves
MONEY.
get real. time to clean up the PAID folks trying to get ahead
trying to show they saved a buck at the volunteer help's time.
I bet these guys wouldn't dream of asking the GA's to ride Greyhound -

The Q&A is below:
======================================
Question
Why are we still using dial‑up modems for clerk's office
computers? I
know it would be possible to allow a broadband connection in the
clerks offices, and lock it down to only allow communication with
SLC, and then Internet surfing would not be allowed.

Answer
As we take into account all associated costs of each access method we
find that the dial up solution costs the Church significantly less
than a broadband solution would. Additionally, we find dial-up much
easier to support at this time. While we recognize the many benefits
to be gained by putting broadband connections in meetinghouses, at
the current time these benefits do not exceed the associated costs.
