There's a simple answer for waiting for dial-up (at least at the stake level):
1) Bring a book with you, or pull up the Scriptures program and study for a little while.
2) Contrast how much time you sit there waiting for the computer to download and process updates, with how much time it would take you to chase down every single ward and branch clerk in your stake for a disk.
