The existing computer is an unbranded homebrew with
unidentified components (which drivers to use?) that doesn't
have the minimum requirements of 1.0 GHz CPU speed.

It will break. You will stop transmitting deposits. You
will call the FM group telling them you no longer have a
computer.
a) They will replace it.
b) You will call SL and tell them they won't replace it.
Either way you will get a new computer.
One of the ways to break it would be to go ahead and
try to install Desktop 5.5 as SL has instructed. Make
a good back up first. [grin]
